Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get an instrument for my child?

There are several music stores that carry good quality instruments for school aged students.
Use the "Music Store" link above.

I found a cheap instrument on Amazon, Ebay, at BJs/Costco or an online "music" site. Should I get it?

NO!! For elementary students, it is HIGHLY recommended that you RENT an instrument now, rather than buy one. String instruments are sized to fit the child. Your child will have a difficult time playing if they are using an instrument of the wrong size.
It is NEVER recommended to buy inexpensive instruments at wholesale club type stores or online auction sites. They are usually inferior and are sometimes completely unusable. If a price seems too good to be true, it usually is. Mrs. McKay and Ms. Mellott would be happy to help assist you in getting an instrument that will be appropriate for your child.

THE BEST PLACE TO GET AN INSTRUMENT IS A MUSIC STORE!!!

Why you shouldn't buy a cheap violin online (or anywhere for that matter!)

How do I know what size string instrument to get for my child?
Music stores will help you with getting the correct size instrument.
Mrs. McKay can also help with choosing the correct size instrument. It is important that they are using an instrument that is the correct size. Serious muscular and nerve damage can develop from improper playing positions and poor posture as a result of incorrect instrument size.

Can my child quit Band, Orchestra or Chorus?
Instrumental & Vocal Music is a year-long commitment. Although you may remove your child from the program if there are extenuating circumstances, students will not be let out of the program without a parent conference.  It is important that you use this as an opportunity for your child to learn about commitment and responsibility.
